An Introduction
to Wine Spectator
Awards
The Wine Spectator's Restaurant Awards recognize restaurants whose wine lists offer interesting selections appropriate to their cuisine and appeal to a wide range of wine lovers.
To qualify for an award, the list must present complete, accurate wine information. It must include vintages and appellations for all selections, including wines available by the glass. Complete producer names and correct spellings are mandatory, while the overall presentation and appearance of the list is also taken into consideration. After meeting these basic requirements, lists are judged for the awards.
The Award of Excellence is the magazine’s basic award given to restaurants in recognition of their lists that offer a well-chosen selection of quality producers, along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style. Typically, these lists offer at least 100 selections.
The Best of Award of Excellence is its prestigious award, created to give special recognition to restaurants that clearly exceed the requirements of the Award of Excellence. These lists display either vintage depth, with vertical offerings of several top producers from major regions, or excellent breadth spread over several winegrowing regions. These wine lists typically offer 500 or more selections, along with superior presentation.
Highly coveted worldwide, the Best of Award of Excellence is given by the magazine’s judging panel of wine experts, connoisseurs and editors only to those establishments which possess a superlative combination of wine lists, menu with excellently matching food, ambience, pricing, and wine programme.
Each year thousands of restaurants and hotels around the world are reviewed for the magazine’s Restaurant Awards Programme, but only a few are recognised as the world’s best!

MASTERFUL WINES FROM WASHINGTON STATE |
Columbia Winery is Washington’s first premium winery, producing distinctive Washington wines from European vinifera grapes since 1962. Winemaker Emeritus David Lake, deemed "Dean of Washington Winemakers" by both Wine Spectator and Decanter Magazine, believed in the synergy between art and science, and continued the founders’ tradition of innovation by introducing new varietals to the state, such as Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Gris. Today, Director of Winemaking Kerry Norton honors the Columbia Winery tradition by crafting highly-acclaimed and award wining wines from Washington State.

Wines from Columbia Winery exhibit the rich fruit flavors indicative of Washington from the refreshing Gewurztraminer to the well rounded Cabernet Sauvignon to the smoky Syrah, you will find that each wine has a superb balance of fruit and acidity to complement any meal or occasion.

Washington state is the second largest premium wine producing state in the United States, with over 400 wineries and more than 30,000 acres of vineyards. Although Seattle and the area west of the Cascade Mountains are noted for heavy rainfall, the height of the Cascades act as a “rain shadow” holding back the moisture to the extent that the Columbia Valley wine growing region receives an average of 8 inches of rainfall per year. Due to the extreme northerly latitude, the region’s long, hot, sunny days and cool, clear nights allow the vineyards to produce grapes full of complex flavors and aromas.

THE ROYAL CLIFF WINE CLUB WELCOMES THAILAND'S PREMIER WINERY
The Royal Cliff Wine Club’s exclusive tasting of a select range of unique wines from the PB Khao Yai Winery which took place at the Royal Cliff Grand & Spa, one of the four 5-star hotels at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort. The event was graced by the presence and deep expertise and knowledge of Mr. Prayut Piangbunta, the Chief Winemaker of PB Khao Yai and Thailand’s first winemaker as well as Mr. Sorapat Tongprasroeth, the Senior Vice President of BB Groups Trading Co., Ltd., the marketing company for this winery.

Together with Mr. Ranjith Chandrasiri, Deputy General Manager, Royal Cliff Beach Resort and President of the Royal Cliff Wine Club, the three speakers introduced the fundamentals of wine tasting to new members, fully explaining the methodology and reasoning behind the different techniques as well as highlighting specific aspects to take note of, to the keen members in attendance.
Each of the excellent seven vintages were tested in sequence, with a detailed and illuminating description given by the evening’s speakers of the 3 white wines, 3 reds and 1 rose, starting with the easy to drink Sawasdee PB Valley Chenin Blanc 2007 and ending with the Gold Medal winning PB Khao Yai Reserve Shiraz 2004.
Other favourites of the evening included the Pirom Khao Yai Reserve Chenin Blanc 2007 which is used by Thai Airways as well as the popular Pirom Khao Yai Reserve Tempranillo 2007, the only Tempranillo bottled in Asia.
The wine club members took advantage of this unique opportunity to raise a number of questions from the effects of the global economic slowdown on the winery industry to the specifics of wine making techniques as well as the business aspects of running a competitive winery in Asia.
Thanks to the PB Khao Yai representatives, Mr. Ranjith Chandrasiri as well as the keen wine club members - new and old, the evening proved to be an entertaining and educational event which left all participants asking the date of the next event.
The Royal Cliff Wine Club was launched on the 28th of April, 2001 and is a by-product of the resort's enthusiasm in promoting wines and hosting wine-related events.
