NEXT: AUSTRALIAN WINEMAKER'S DINNER
featuring BOUTIQUE YERING STATION WINES
5 June 2004 at 19.00 hrs
Grand Ballroom, Royal Cliff Grand

Greetings from the Royal Cliff Wine Club!

After our first Thai Winemaker's Dinner last 30 April 2004 I am sure a lot of your initial notions on Thai wines were challenged and met head on. Expectations were indeed met: some even exceeded.

I am certain that recent wine dinner will be remembered for
a long time to come and its wines a subject of debate and conversation for most of us in the coming days still ahead.

If you think you've had your fill of exceptional wines and gourmet feasts then you'd better think again, dear friends.

I am pleased to announce that another exciting wine dinner is only a few weeks away. On 5 June 2004, the Royal Cliff Wine Club brings you five wine varieties from the seemingly mythical YERING Station winery.

The event will be co-sponsored by Nicolas BC Co., Ltd.
with Dr. Niti Meyer, the company's Chairperson, joining us
at this exclusive event. Wine connoisseur and international wine authority Mr. David Andrews of Yering Station will present the wines as our guest speaker.

Yering Station is a premium winery in the heart of the Yarra Valley, one hour east of Melbourne. None can match its illustrious pedigree in Victoria for the simple fact that it was
the first winery ever to be built there way back in 1838. It is also considered as one of the pillars of the Australian wine industry giving birth to Victorian winemaking.

In 1837, the Ryrie brothers (William, Donald and James) travelled overland from Monaro in New South Wales with a
herd of cattle. They took up a grazing licence of 43,000 acres,
an area stretching from Woori Yallock Creek to Olinda Creek,
bordered by the Yarra River on the North. They called the property Yering, its Aboriginal name.

In 1861, the Yering Station vineyard won the Argus Gold Cup for the best Victorian vineyard. It was for some more years
the largest in the area, was always regarded as having one of the most favourable sites.

In 1889, Paul de Castella won a Grand Prix at the Paris Exhibition. Only fourteen such prizes were awarded for wine from all over the world; Yering's was the only one for wine
from the Southern Hemisphere. By then there were many other
larger vineyards throughout Victoria. By the early 20th century, wine and vineyards in the Yarra Valley were in decline, as was the case in much of Victoria.

The Rathbone family acquired it in 1996. Since then, the vineyards have been extended, the winery and main building designed by Robert Conti, and a partership made with the champagne house Devaux.

The Yarrabank Thibaut & Gillet Cuvee, 1998 sparkling wine for reception - borne of the traditional method Champegnoise, and praised by respected wine critic James Halliday as “a delicacy unmatched by any other Australian sparkling wine..." is only a “moderate achiever” compared to the other four wines which will be served during dinner.

That bit of information coupled with delicious thoughts of another glorious six-course menu from Chef Walter Thenisch and his team of culinary specialists will keep you at the edge
of your seats while you continue to read this month’s newsletter. And as the cliché goes - “There’s plenty more
where that came from!”

As always, limited seating will be offered and prior
RESERVATION is essential.

Aside from enjoying the usual discount privilege, Wine Club members and their guests would be given the same special rate. Please indicate your table preferences; Separate table (for minimum 2 pax) or Joining table with other guests. RSVP. Kindly be advised that the dining hall will be non-smoking.

I look forward to welcome you all once again to another heavyweight wining and dining event.

Cheers!
