The 23rd International Olympiad in Informatics has opened at the Pattaya Exhibition And Convention Hall (PEACH), Royal Cliff Hotels Group, in Pattaya – Thailand on 23rd July 2011.

Prime Minister HE Abhisit Vejjajiva, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Opening Ceremony of the IOI 2011, presided over the opening ceremony of the 23rd IOI, which is hosted by the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST) from 22-29 July. In his speech, the Prime Minister stated that the Government had long been providing full educational support for Thai youth, whose abilities he believed could easily compete with others around the world.

An introductory speech given by the President of IOI, Mr. Arturo Cepeda and was followed by a speech by the Chairman of the IOI 2011, Mr. Kanchit Malaivongs, who welcomed all delegates and contestants to Thailand and also stressed that the objective of the competition was to raise the awareness among Thai youth of the significance of computer science and to encourage developments of related curricula and researches.

Delegates and contestants were entertained to spectacular Thai cultural performances including Muay Thai boxing, which is a local martial arts form in Thailand. A video presentation in celebration of His Majesty the King's 84th birthday was also presented, showcasing His Majesty's personal interest in this field.

The 8-day event, which is held every 4 years brings together intellectually gifted individuals from around the world to discuss a range of topics relating to the use and development of technology. Included in the conference is two days of competition to test teams on their understanding of inventive technology. IOI is one of the most recognized computer science competitions in the world, winners of which belong to the best young computer scientists in the globe. As an IOI medalist, doors will open for a place in the most prestigious industries and universities of the world, related to Computer Science and Information Technologies.

A Commemorative Exhibition of His Majesty the King's 7th cycle Birthday Anniversary and an IT Exhibition showcase for award-winning Thai students are also taking place at PEACH on the event days.

A total of 79 teams from 78 countries with more than 300 contestants are participating in the IOI this year. The IPST has reportedly undergone three years of advance preparation for this event in cooperation with the Promotion of Academic Olympiads and Development of Science Education Foundation, Kasetsat University, Chulalongkorn University, Burapha University, Assumption University, the National Science and Technology Development Agency and the Pattaya Municipality.
